Example city for circular economy. Located in Tropicana, Rotterdam.

  • They want to achieve one large linked production chain that is based on residual materials but does not generate any waste itself.
  • They want to offer (starting) circular entrepreneurs space, guidance, and a dynamic network.
  • Locally produced | Zero waste | Reduce logistics.

BlueCity is a pool of opportunities. In this playground for circular entrepreneurs brains, guts, vision, and fun go together. They serve their coffee with a dose of radical disruption while they head towards a market in which waste does not exist. BlueCity serves as a breeding ground for innovative businesses linking their waste-streams. Inside their ecosystem of social entrepreneurs and disruptors, waste streams are precious building blocks; the output of one is the input for the other. This way they develop a much needed and inspiring example for the circular economy.

The current economy has had its day. At the start of the chain, we are running out of resources while at the end of the chain we are having pressing problems with the piling up of waste. Our system of fabricating, consuming and discarding goods is no longer sustainable. If the 10 billion of us want to continue living together thoughtfully we will have to look for innovative solutions to our problems. These new solutions lie in the closing of the loops.

Start-ups and small initiatives show us how it can be done, but circular entrepreneurship does not go by itself. In BlueCity they offer (starting) circular entrepreneurs space, direction, assistance, and a powerful network they need to make sure that their achievable and scalable plans will get the chance to scale up into businesses that create impact. Together with entrepreneurs, researchers, neighbors, the government and education they create a circular economy, close the loops and build the city of the future.
